Different Kinds of Arthritis

Arthritis is a painful and potentially debilitating joint disease that affects thousands of Americans every day. It is also a condition that affects many different parts of the body; today there are more than 100 known forms of arthritis, and each has its own name and method of treatment. This article serves to list which are the most prevalent forms of arthritis known today and how some of them get treated.

The most common types of arthritis

In general, there are two major types of arthritis, the kind that is brought on by "wear and tear," which is osteoarthritis, and an inflammatory variety, better known as rheumatoid arthritis, that is triggered by your immune system not working properly. Another type is Gout, which occurs when crystals collect in your joints. Other less common types include lupus, septic and psoriatic arthritis.

Causes and symptoms of osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis, by far, is the most common of all the types of arthritis. It is most caused by overuse of your joints, most commonly brought on by obesity, aging and strenuous sports or activities. This condition occurs when the cartilage, or soft tissue between the joints, wears down, causing painful friction between the joints. Symptoms include swelling, deep throbbing pain, stiffness and fatigue, among other things.

Causes and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an auto-immune disease that takes place because the immune system attacks parts of the body. Though the cause is not known, this condition is very common. Some of the symptoms include pain, fatigue and swelling in the affected areas. This type is more painful than osteoarthritis.

Millions of Americans are affected by the many types of arthritis. You can protect yourself somewhat by taking care of your joints as much as possible from a young age, and if you start to have symptoms, get them checked out with your doctor right away.
